ST Configurator™ Software

ST Configurator™ is used to configure a drive for your application. Drive set up is divided into sections so that you can focus on each area of configuration, one at a time.

Drop down menus provide additional functionality.

Note that the buttons described below are dependent upon the type of drive currently connected. For example, certain drives with limited I/O (STM, ST5/10-S, etc) combine the "Motion..." and "I/O" functions into a single button called "Motion & I/O". The following descriptions are general.

Drive / Revision Section

The Drive drop-down list shows all of the available drive model numbers.

The Revision window will display a drive's firmware version once the drive is properly connected to the PC and power is supplied.

Communication Section

This area allows you to select between RS-232/485 and Ethernet communication.  It also allows you to select a comm port or IP address, and includes the buttons for uploading and downloading configurations to the drive.  For details, please see Communicating With Your Drive.

Motor Section

The Motor... button opens the motor parameters window. For the ST5/ST10 and STAC5/STAC6 drives, you will choose a specially matched motor from our database, or enter the parameters for a custom motor. The STM17, STM23 and STM24 Drive+Motor series have specially matched motors built-in, but you'll still need to use the motor dialog to specify the drive current and load inertia. For more details, see Configuring the Motor.

Motion Section

The Motion... button opens the Motion Control Mode window where you will select the operating mode of the drive. Note that certain drives with limited I/O (STM, ST5/10-S, etc) combine the "Motion..." and "I/O" functions into a single button called "Motion & I/O".

Not all modes are available for each drive model (see table below).

I/O Section (ST-Q, ST-C and ST-Si drives only)

The I/O... button opens the I/O Configuration window where you can assign special, dedicated functions to the various drive inputs. Each drive has specific I/O that may be assigned to certain dedicated functions. Consult your drive's hardware manual for specific details on the capabilities of each I/O function. The I/O Configuration dialog window allows you to choose all the options. Note that certain drives with limited I/O (STM, ST5/10-S, etc) combine the "Motion..." and "I/O" functions into a single button called "Motion & I/O".

Encoder Section (models with encoder option only)

The Encoder... button opens the Encoder Feedback window where you can enter the parameters for an optional encoder and select one of the two available encoder functions: Stall Detection or Stall Prevention. ST-Q, ST-C and ST-Si, as well as the STAC5 drives can be purchased with an optional encoder card, for connecting a motor-mounted encoder to the drive. The STAC6 drive includes an encoder input port on all models. STM models have an optional 1000 line encoder housed inside the drive+motor assembly.

For more details, see Configuring an Encoder.
